The University of Washington, Seattle, is very pleased to host one of twelve APS-sponsored Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) in January 18-20, 2019. The application is now open and closes on Friday, October 12, 2018 (see conference website). The conference is fully funded for students (covering all accommodation and meals). Students do not need to be a declared Physics major – they need only be taking (or have taken) Physics class(es), and be open to learning about career opportunities in Physics.
The APS CUWiP goal is to empower and support women in science! We provide undergraduate women the opportunity to experience a professional conference, gain information about graduate school and professions in physics, and have access to other women in physics of all ages with whom they can share experiences, advice, and ideas. Conference activities are designed to benefit students at all undergraduate stages -including first-year students - empowering them to persist and succeed in science careers.
The conference will start with a lab tour and a conference banquet on the afternoon of Friday, January 18th and end on Sunday afternoon, January 20th. The keynote address on Saturday will be given by Fabiola Gianotti, an internationally recognized particle physicist and Director-General at CERN, and will be webcast to all twelve regional conferences.
The program will include talks by faculty and industry professionals, panel discussions about graduate school and careers in physics, presentations and discussions about women in physics, lab tours, student research presentations, and ample opportunities for interactions among attendees and with speakers.
Lodging and meals will be provided for participants who are accepted to the conference. In the past, CUWiP has been able to ensure that nearly all students had travel support either through their department or through the conference. We encourage your department to provide travel support, but if it they cannot, please email us (uw.cuwip2019@gmail.com) and we will work with you to arrange travel reimbursement. We don’t want any woman to be discouraged because of funding!
